Goodbye Friends and a Horrific Story

Heather was an angel during the most embarrassing moment of my life. I mean I have a lot of embarrassing moments, but this one is still hard to laugh about. I was a senior in college and our Senior Seminar class was heading to Salt Lake for a conference. We were about an hour outside of Cedar City when within a matter of seconds I went from a sleepy normal, to hot, to sweaty out my eyeballs, to puking up everything I ever ate. I didn't even have time to realize I was sick until my vomit completely covered every inch of the SUU mini van and the girls in it. Then to my horror, it happened again. I tried to use my shirt this time to capture the flying mess, but it was too much and overflowed onto the floor.

Later at the gas station as I watched my teacher scrubbing out the van, I was thinking "This is all my classmates are ever going to remember me by. 'Oh yeah, you're the girl who puked all over me.' Surely, who can forget someone that throws up on them?" But Heather came over and interrupted my thoughts.
"Hey, I think our husbands are in the CM program together."
"Really? Who is your husband?"
"Kevin Sandall."
Kevin Sandall? I had heard Dirk talk about him. I knew that they had made up a position for him in the National Homebuilders Assocaiton Club and they called him the "gopher." I had always imagined a short, pudgy kid with coke bottle glasses. A nice kid. A not-all-the-way there kid. If this was true, he was one lucky kid because Heather is blond, petite, and gorgeous. Plus, like the nicest person ever. (Later, upon meeting Kevin I realized why Heather did marry him. Because he is funny, handsome, and very talented.)

Heather and I talk a little bit more before the van is cleaned out and everyone is ready to go. Then Heather leans over and in all my pukey, smelly mess gives me a hug. I knew that moment that Heather could be my friend and I felt a tiny bit better about my disaster. So, I sat stranded at the gas station as everyone else continued to Salt Lake. A horrific memory. A new friend.
Over the past few years we became better friends with Heather and Kevin and we enjoy them very much. But this weekend, they left us to start a fun, new job in North Carolina! Goodbye friends. We will miss you!
